The living plant

As mentioned, the Calathea can be kept well in the house. This plant will color the house in places where other plants do not like to be.
In addition to the living room, of course, it fits perfectly in dark locations in the house, such as in the hall.

But what about the bathroom? The Calathea feels completely at home in this humid, low-light environment. And the bedroom? It is precisely here that you can easily see that the leaves close in the evening.

In the morning when the first light comes through the windows, the plant extends its leaves and unfolds again. In short, a plant that provides rhythm in many places in the house.

• The Calathea is best served at temperatures between 15 and 23 degrees.
• The Calathea is a shade loving plant and does not like sunlight.

The Marantaceae is a plant family that occurs in the subtropics, in particular the jungle of Brazil. The plants grow in the wild like shrubs, which can easily reach a height of a few meters. It is family of the banana plant. Among the native population, the Marantaceae family is also known for its nutritional value: the roots are edible. The large leaves of the plants lend themselves again to the roofing of huts. It is obvious that the Marantaceae also has a medical meaning. The plant family owes its name to an Italian doctor, Maranti, who wrote a standard work as early as the sixteenth century on the medical properties of flowers and plants.

The decorative leaf is characteristic of the Marantaceae. It is mainly the leaves that determine the attraction value of the plant. The cultivars have very different leaf colors and grain drawings. The colors range from silver, white-pink to various shades of green.
The most important genus of the Marantaceae family is the Calathea. There must be many dozens of varieties, but many species have not yet been discovered in the often impenetrable jungle. Our supplier grows an average of fifteen varieties. The assortment also changes regularly.

The living plant

The Calathea has a special feature: the leaves close when the amount of light decreases. The plant therefore has a day and night rhythm, which has earned it the nickname of 'living plant'. The closing of the leaves of the Calathea is also audible, with a rustling sound.
