Ficus Carica (Fig tree)
The ficus Carica or also called the fig tree can be found in the areas around the Mediterranean, Asia Minor and North West India. Nowadays also in the Southern Europe.
The fig tree likes to be in a warm place, in full sun or a little shade, both are good. In summer the plant needs a lot of water, make sure that if you put the plant in a pot, it will be well drained, use potting soil mixed with hydro grains, gravel is also allowed. This makes it easier to drain the water and prevents root rot. If you have a place in the garden, it is even better to plant the plant in open ground. Give one or two hands full of fertilizer granules in the spring (Pokon). Possibly again in the summer, but be careful not to give too much. The fig tree flowers in May and can be fertilized without pollination.
You can prune the branches in spring or autumn, but only in autumn when all the leaves have fallen off, otherwise the tree will bleed. The white juice that comes out can irritate the eyes and hands. The fruit is red flesh and sweet, you can use it to make jam.
The leaves are thick and leathery and fresh green in color. The fig tree loses its leaves in autumn.
