Intro
The Podocarpus is a strong tree suitable for the Bonsai. Because of the leathery leaves of the plant it is suitable for indoor use. It could also be placed outside, but make sure that it is well protected against the freezing cold.
Location
The Podocarpus loves a little light, but never puts it in the bright sun. The plant does not like too much shade either. A spot in the semi-shade is therefore ideal. The direct sun can damage the plant, so keep a few meters distance in front of a window on the west or east, and for the south there is some extra distance.
Temperature
The Podocarpus does not require many temperatures, so the plant can be placed both outside and inside. Please note that when the plant is placed outside you protect the plant against the freezing cold.
Repotting
It is advisable to repot the Podocarpus every 3/4 years in a larger pot. Always do this in the spring, so that the plant has enough time to recover from any damage.
Watering
It is important to keep the soil moist and not to let it dry out completely. In summer you can water considerably more than in winter. It is also possible to immerse the pot for 10 minutes.
Pruning
Pruning is possible all year round and promotes the growth of new buds and branches.
Origin
The family of the Podocarpus has about 100 species and can be found in the suptropic areas. In the Netherlands they are also often found in gardens, botanical gardens and as Bonsai. Podocarpus Latifolius is the national tree of South Africa.
Diseases
The Podocarpus is a strong plant and generally has no problems with diseases and/or pests.
