Amaryllis

The Amaryllis belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is actually called Hippeastrum. Amaryllis and Hippeastrum are two closely related genera and are often confused. The biggest difference is in the stem. Amaryllis has a massive stem and Hippeastrum a hollow stem. Hippeus means knight and Astrum star, hence the Dutch name Ridderster.

Choice

Hippeastrum is now available in many types and colors. In the past this was mainly only red and pink, now almost all colors are conceivable. Large-flowered, double-flowered, small-flowered, leguminous and multiflora types have become available in a wide range in recent years.

Care

Can withstand both light and shadow. The soil must be kept moist, fertilising is not necessary

Bloom

You can store an amaryllis in a pot to make it bloom again. After the last flowers, you must remove the stems. Leave the bulb in the pot and water. Cut the leaves after 7 months and remove the bulb from the pot. Place this in a cool, especially dry place, 10-17'C (Cellar). Leave the bulb for about 10 weeks, then replant it in a pot. Give the bulb water again and keep the room temperature again. The bulb will make leaves again and then give flowers again. Good luck.

Water and humidity

Amaryllis on glass or dish: Remove the bulb from the pot and rinse well under the tap (soil must be out of the roots). Let the bulb dry and place it on a dish or in a glass. The bulb does not need water to start flowering.

Amaryllis in the garden: This bulbs also does well outside. The bulb can be planted outdoors from the beginning of May. Also keep the soil moist here for the best results. Make sure the bulb is in a place where it can not catch too much wind so that the petals remain beautiful.
