Schefflera Compacta

The origin of the Schefflera is Australia. The Schefflera is an easy to care houseplant. The houseplant needs little maintenance, likes light but can also be in the partial shade and is therefore very suitable for offices.

Generally moderate watering, in the growth period that runs from March to August keep the soil slightly damp, watering in the winter, once every 10 days should suffice. Of course this depends on the amount of water. You can let the soil dry out slightly before watering again. Do not leave the roots in the water, this causes root rot.

If the pot is provided (or you provide it yourself) with a substrate and a water meter, watering is easy! Upon arrival there is little water, fill the pot slowly with water (sometimes wait) and you will see that the meter automatically rises. All you have to do is keep an eye on this meter. If you go on vacation, you can fill the pot almost half full (you can see this at the meter that comes to an end above its maximum) and you can safely leave for 3 weeks. In addition, it is also not bad if the plants do not get too much water too quickly. The substrate absorbs the water, so when the water meter is at the bottom the substrate is still damp, but there is no water at the bottom of the pot. The plant still has plenty enough for 4 summer days.

Only spray the Schefflera occasionally to remove dust from the leaves and to prevent vermin. Spraying also promotes the quality and ornamental value of the houseplant.

The Schefflera likes to be in a bright spot, with a maximum of 3 to 4 hours of direct sunlight. The more colored Scheffleras such as the trinette or gold capella prefer a little more light.

The distance to a south-facing window for the green species is 3 to 4 meters, with a window on the east or west this is 2 to 3 meters and with a window on the north 1 to 2 meters. The variegated species can be brought closer by 1 to 2 meters in all windows.

Minimum temperature

16 ° C during the day

12 ° C at night

To provide the Schefflera with new food once every two months. Use Pokon green plants for this. Feeding only in the spring or summer. Never give too much this can lead to burning of the roots. Check the packaging for the correct dosage.

You can best transplant a Schefflera into a larger pot once every three years. The best period for overpouling is spring or immediately after purchase of the plant. A larger pot will stimulate growth and the advantage is a larger buffer soil so that the water is more dispersed and there is less chance of root rot. Always take a pot that is 20 to 25% larger and do not use Hydro granules on the bottom of the pot. It is best to use a plastic insert with large pots.

Leaf damage

If a Schefflera gets discolored (brown or yellow) leaves, this is most likely due to a shortage of sunlight. Put the houseplant closer to the window about one meter. It is often thought that falling leaf is a cause of too little water, this is usually not the case, so do not give extra water because this will lead to more leaf fall.

The Schefflera can also be too light, you can see this because a yellow glow appears on the leaves. In that case, place the indoor plant one meter further away from the window.

A Schefflera is a relatively fast grower and can best be pruned in the autumn. The advantage of this is that the plant receives more light and remains more compact. The Schefflera will "branch off at every branch where it has been pruned". This will give you a nice full room or office plant. Use a pruning shears for this.

The Schefflera is a slightly toxic plant. The juice of the schefflera can irritate the skin, keep the houseplant away from animals and children.

The schefflera suffers the most from mealybugs, this can be caused by drafts on the plant. If possible, place the plant outside or in the shower to clean this indoor plant with a strong jet of water. Possibly post-treatment with a biological "or if desired" a chemical pesticide.

The Schefflera is a versatile plant that occurs in many variations.
