Trachycarpus Fortunei, better known as 'Asian Fan Palm', is the most popular palm species in Northern Europe. This is mainly because this palm does best in European weather conditions. Even winters with 18 degree frosts this palm can survive. Trachycarpus gets its name from biologist Robert Fortune and originates from northern China. Here the palm grows on the walls of the Himalayas where snow and extreme cold are not uncommon. Trachycarpus is also a fast grower and after several years in the open ground can add about 25 centimeters of trunk per year. Even in the Netherlands the palm can grow to a height of 4 to 5 meters.
Trachycarpus Fortunei is easy to care for and can be kept in the ground or in a pot. This palm needs a sunny spot and very well drained soil. The palm grows best in the open ground. Due to its high winter hardiness and its strong leaves, the plant can be kept outside even in winter. When putting this palm in a pot make sure it is a large deep pot. During hot summers we recommend regular watering, depending on how moist the soil still is. As with any palm, the oldest brown leaves should be cut as close to the trunk as possible. This has no further effect on the palm.
The plants are 65 to 75 cm tall on delivery (measured including pot). The plants are delivered in pots with a diameter of 21cm.
