The Curcuma is a symbol of Asian nature and culture. In the wild, Curcuma is found in countries such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and India. The plant has also been named Siamese Tulip there, due to its beautiful pink flowers. The herb of certain Curcuma species has been an important part of Indian medicine for centuries and is still used in dishes today. Also known as turmeric in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, these Curcumas will not produce this spice, but the ease of care that the plant brings makes up for it. This Curcuma blooms from June through September. Actually, the flowers are not real flowers but colored bracts meant to attract insects.
Care
The sunlight in the rain forests of Southeast Asia is a lot brighter and therefore the Curcuma in the Netherlands likes to be in a place with a lot of sunlight. For example, a window frame is an ideal place for the Curcuma. Do keep an eye on the plant during the summer months, as the leaves can burn. In that case, move the plant temporarily to a more shady spot. Above 15 °C, the plant could even stand outside! The Curcuma likes a moist potting soil, so do not let it dry out. Eventually, the Curcuma can grow up to 150-200 cm! Furthermore, the Curcuma Al Siam Splash is non-toxic, so ideal if you have pets.
