Homegrown pomegranates from your own garden? It is a possibility with the Punica Granatum shrub! This special shrub has been used as an ornamental shrub for centuries and has been loved throughout this time because of its tasty and very healthy fruit. The Punica Granatum starts off as a shrub and will grow into a small tree with a round top. The top is closed and is densely branched with light brown twigs with a sharp tip (branch thorns). The shiny green leaves turn into a beautiful yellow brown colour in Autumn. This shrub does not only grow delicious fruit, it also has a gorgeous blossom with orange red flowers. The blossom is followed by the delicious edible fruit. The big yellow red fruit contain countless seeds in a sweet, fleshy pulp and is full of vitamins and minerals.
Care
The Punica Granatum is not difficult to care for, but it does need a good summer to mature in our climate. Because of its limited winter hardiness (-8C), this tree in northwestern Europe can only be used as a tub plant in gardens, patios and courtyards. A pomegranate tree can grow in any fertile, moist but well-drained soil. The tree likes a spot in full sun. If the tree is planted in the garden, it is advisable to protect it from the cold during severe frosts. Eventually the pomegranate plant can grow up to 200-300cm! Furthermore, the plant is non-toxic.
