A Camellia is a must-have for any garden, especially in spring. The Camellia Japonica is better known as the Japanese rose. The plant is native to China, Japan and Vietnam, where it grows high in the mountains. It is very hardy and retains its leaves even in winter, making it an ideal plant for the European climate. Its best feature, however, are its flowers. Camellia Japonica is an early bloomer, as its beautiful flowers grow from February to May.
Care
A Camellia prefers a slightly acidic soil, preferably rich in humus. During the summer, it is important to keep the soil around the plant well moist. The plant prefers to be in partial shade. Eventually the plant will grow into a large shrub, but several plants can also be put together to make one large shrub. Furthermore, the Camellia does not grow quickly, usually about 15-20cm per year. Therefore, especially in the beginning, it is not necessary to prune the plant regularly. However, it is important to remove spent branches and spent flowers.
