As one of the new red-flowering hydrangeas, 'Wim's Red' is certainly one of the better ones. The plant grows beautiful, dark red, sturdy stems. And, like the color of the stems, the flowers fade as well. The flowers fade from white to pink and then to wine-red. Flowering begins in June. The reddish-colored flowers remain very attractive until late in the fall. You will enjoy this hydrangea for a long time! If not pruned, this hardy hydrangea can grow up to three to four feet tall, but it can also be pruned to a certain height each spring so that it remains compact. The hydrangea can grow up to 150 cm and is hardy to -35 degrees Celsius.
Care
Hydrangea paniculata 'Wim's Red' thrives best in dry to moist, well-drained soil. It prefers a position in full sun or partial shade. The flowers of the Wim's Red color best in a sunny position. Hydrangeas do not like drought and need a lot of water, especially in summer. It is best to give the hydrangea a good amount of water at once rather than a little every now and then. It can be planted from March to mid-October, either in the open ground or in an ornamental pot, although it grows best in the open ground. When planting, keep a distance of 75 cm between plants. Pruning the plant is best done in March, about 30 cm above the ground. The harder you prune back the hydrangea, the larger the flowers will grow.
