Prunus domestica Opal is one of the best-known plum varieties. The tree is self-pollinating, which means you don't need a second fruit tree to get fruit. The plums have an explosion of flavor and a thin skin. They are perfect for eating right off the tree, but they can also be used in jams or juices, for example. The delicious plums can be harvested in July/August. After harvesting, the plum will keep for as long as three weeks. In April/May the tree has beautiful, lightly fragrant white flowers.
Care for
Prunus domestica Opal is not difficult to care for. The tree likes to stand in a spot in the sun or semi shade in a nutritious, calcareous soil that is not too wet. The more sun the tree gets, the better the fruit will grow. The plum tree likes to receive some nutrition in the spring, as an extra boost for the summer. The plum tree can be pruned after harvest.
