The Yucca Elephantipes is a sturdy house palm that originated in Central America. Here this palm species is widely grown in large nurseries deep in the rainforests. The Yucca gets its name from its heavy rhizomes, reminiscent of elephant feet. The leaves of the Yucca Elephantipes are thick and fleshy with a sharp, finely serrated edge. The Yucca's lower leaves die naturally as the plant grows. These should be carefully removed to maintain a neat appearance.
Care
The Yucca is one of the easiest houseplants around because the plant does not require much water. Watering once every two weeks is more than enough. It is very important that no water remains at the bottom of the pot, otherwise the roots will rot. The Yucca prefers a light position, but make sure it is not in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight causes discoloration of the leaves. Once every 2-3 months, the Yucca needs sufficient nutrition to ensure that the leaves remain beautifully green. Please note that the plant is toxic to humans and animals!
